Basics:
During installation of the HGS Investor software we check the Windows Registry to see if there is an existing copy of HGS Investor and use that location to install. Finding an existing location will cause the software to do an update of HGSI and not a complete installation. We do not update the filters, chart views, warehouse views, combos.
If you have multiple copies of HGS Investor installed, the Windows Registry will be pointing to the location of the HGS Investor that was last started.
If we don't find a existing installation, we use the following default locations:
For Windows XP and earlier our default is: c:\Program Files
For Windows VISTA our default is: c:\Users\Public\Documents
(see special VISTA note below)
NOTE: The Quotes Plus database uses its own installer for Vista, XP or earlier.
The folder "Quotes Plus Data" is installed into your root directory. e.g. C:\Quotes Plus Data
The folder "Quotes Plus" is installed into the Windows Program Files folder. e.g. C:\Program Files\Quotes Plus
During Installation:
When an installation is being performed, the HGS Investor software installer first checks to see where the last copy of HGS Investor was started from on your computer. E.g. it might have been started from c:\Program Files\HGS Investor. But if you have multiple copies of HGS Investor another copy might be installed at c:\Documents and Settings\Owner\HGS Investor. Depending on which copy you last started determines the location that will be in the Windows Registry.
How can I know where HGS Investor software is going to be installed and what can I do if it is not going to install into the desired location?
During the installation we show the installation path to you. You must click Ok to proceed. If the installer is not pointing to the copy of HGS Investor you want updated then you will need to edit the location that is being displayed to point to another location. An easier technique is to cancel the installation and start the copy of HGS Investor that you want to update. This will change Windows Registry. When you restart the installation, the installer will now display the location of the HGS Investor copy that you just started and you can avoid any editing.
To further help you to know the location of the current installed copy of HGS Investor that is running you can always look at the title bar of HGS Investor. In this example it shows the default path for VISTA installations.
:
VISTA. Security changes in VISTA present a problem for HGS Investor software when it is installed into the Windows Program Files. If you see this message "Unable to rename TMP.IMD to IMDATA.IMD" it most likely means you are currently installed into Windows Program Files or some other location. The solution is to put HGS Investor into our default location of c:\Users\Public\Documents. To do this you will need to do one of two things. Uninstall HGS Investor and then reinstall from the HGS Investor web site (DO NOT INSTALL FROM A WORKSHOP CD OR ANYOTHER CD) The other solution is to download and install an additional copy of HGS Investor but you will need to edit the installation path to be c:\Users\Public\Documents. |
