Data Update User Guide (End of Day) & Intraday
The purpose of this user guide is to provide
an in depth understanding of the HGSI features that update User Groups,
Exported ASCII and Metastock files and HGSI Reference Groups. It
covers End of Day & Intraday updating.
SUMMARY
There are 3 ways to update
the HGSI database:
End of Day (EOD): Use the Update
button on the HGSI Main toolbar. This feature updates over 800 HGSI
Warehouse and Filter data fields such as the security prices, fundamentals,
indexes, industry groups, moving averages and more. A full Update can be
done at anytime of the day. If there is no new data to update
the database you receive a message. Updates to the full database are
usually accomplished at EOD after the markets close and new data is
available from the exchanges. EOD Updating can also update exported
HGSI Metastock and ASCII files. EOD data updates are included in the
price of a HGSI subscription. Data
Update Schedule
Intraday:
Use the Intraday
button on the HGSI Main toolbar. This feature requires you to
select an intraday data provider to update the Intraday
data fields for the Warehouse and Filters. These special
data fields are used with the standard HGSI tools to track stock performance
during the trading day. Our recommended provider is ThinkOrSwim
(TOS). Depending on the Intraday provider selected
you may be required to purchase an API (Application Program Interface)
key from that provider to access their data. Intraday data updates
are not included in the price of the HGSI subscription.
Intraday and End of Day (EOD) Together: You
can do a full End of Day Update
anytime during the trading day and include the Intraday data. A
full EOD update that includes the Intraday data rebuilds a variety
of additional warehouse indexes, moving averages, etc., that are not
updated with Intraday only updates. This feature is useful for getting
early EOD stock price updates after the market closes for the day.
To include the Intraday data with the EOD data you must have the "Enable Intraday"
option selected on the Intraday
button of the HGSI Maintoolbar and you must have the "Update and include
intraday data" option selected on the Update
button.

button on the HGSI Main toolbar. This feature updates over 800 HGSI Warehouse

files: The update process will also update each of the Metastock
folders listed when you click on the Metastock

process will also update each of the ASCII folders listed when you click
the ASCII

Automatically update HGSI every day at:
The update process will start by itself at the designated time.
HGSI must be running for the automatic update process to work.
Update and include intraday data: Include all intraday data previously
brought into HGSI during market hours using the Intraday features. This
option is used primarily to do full database update to the HGSI database
during the day.
Data is updated several
times following the close of a trading day:
5:30pm ET US Equities
6:30pm ET US Equities
& ETFs
7:30pm ET US HGSI

9:00pm ET Final Settlements
on all securities
6:15am ET Fundamental
data (morning following a trading day)

There are three ways to be informed of the
most recent EOD data availability for updating the database on your machine:
Click the HGSI Update Button.
HGSI will either start receiving data or display the message
"All data is up-to-date"
Go to the
HGSI
Alerts Webpage to check for the last update or subscribe to the
group for email notification of updates.
Go to the
HGSI
Twitter Page to check for alerts or subscribe to Twitter and have
the alert sent to your mobile device.
Use the
Intraday button
on the HGSI Main toolbar. This feature requires you to select an
intraday data provider to update the special
data fields. Intraday data updates are not
included in the price of the HGSI subscription. Depending
on the Intraday provider selected you may be required to purchase an Application
Program Interface Key (API Key) to access that providers data.
To use Intraday click the Intraday
button on the HGSI Toolbar and select a provider.
Enable Intraday: Turns Intraday ON/OFF.
Update Intraday Now: Updates
all the special Intraday
Data Fields
for every stock in the HGSI stock database.
Intraday Options: Opens
the Intraday Options Window where you select an intraday provider.
Requires the ThinkOrSwim (TOS) software to
be installed running and logged into. If you don't have a TOS
account you can register to open a paper trading account using this link TOS Trading Platform. You do not
need to fund it. Once the account is open, the software will be available
to download under "Download Thinkorswim
Desktop"

Manual Intraday Updates: This
is the default and preferred setting. To do a manual update go to Intraday
on the HGSI Main Toolbar and select Update
Intraday Now to
update all the special Intraday Data Fields
for every stock in the HGSI stock database.
Update
Intraday Data Every XX Minutes: Sets a timer to do a
background check for new data. Default is set to 5 minutes. WARNING: This feature can cause HGSI
to crash on some computers.
If you should encounter a crash restart HGSI, disable the setting
for "Update Intraday Data Every
xx Minutes" and use "Manual
Intraday Updates". You can also try changing the update
minutes from 5 to 10, 15, etc to decrease the frequency of intraday
updates.

FMP API Key to access their realtime intraday data.

This provider requires you to obtain a FREE
API Key
to access their realtime intraday data. After
registration a key will be provided on their web page.
Alpha Vantage is great for small watchlists, portfolios and
chart updates by selecting the chart or group and pressing the F5 key.
LIMITATIONS:
If you select a HGSI group in excess of 5 symbols you will get a warning
message that the update of the group may be slow or cannot be done.

Options: Enter
your Alpha
Vantage API Key. Save
the key. They do not send email and
at this time there doesn't appear to be any mechanism to ask for the key
if it is forgotten.
These are the special intraday data fields
that are updated for each stock in the HGSI Reference Group or the selected
User Group that you are currently using. In Filters and Warehouse
views they can be used in conjuction with the regular corresponding EOD
Field to give comparisons between the prior days data and the current
intraday data.
WAREHOUSE VIEW OF THE ABOVE INTRADAY DATA
FIELDS
When you are working with an individual stock
in the Charting Window or a group of stocks in the Designer/Warehouse/Ranking
you can quickly update just those stock(s) within that window using the
F5 key or the Tools Menu.
